The Myth of Balance

By Priscillar Banda

Balance is not the same as progress.

We talk about work-life balance as if it were a perfect scale, both sides even, steady, calm. But life is rarely steady. It is lopsided, messy, shifting. Success in your career often requires seasons of imbalance, where one priority outweighs the rest. That doesn’t mean neglect. It means choice.

To grow, you must decide where to lean. Sometimes it’s late nights on a project. Other times, it’s early mornings with your child. Balance isn’t symmetry. Balance is honesty about what matters most right now.

What does that honesty look like?

Stop chasing perfection.

Name your current season.

Tell the truth about your limits.

Say no to the noise.

And when the season shifts, shift with it.

Balance is not the goal. Integrity is. And integrity comes from aligning your energy with your deepest commitments, not from keeping your calendar tidy.
